Abstract

CARO, Isaac  and  FLORES FUENZALIDA, Alejandro. The Chilean Armed Forces: Its History, Present, and Society Project. rev.relac.int.estrateg.segur. [online]. 2020, vol.15, n.2, pp.73-85.  Epub Sep 25, 2020. ISSN 1909-3063.  https://doi.org/10.18359/ries.4676.

This article discusses the role of the Chilean armed forces in cultural identity. It describes four periods in the history of the Army according to the main national influence it has received: Spanish, French, German, and American. The importance of this topic lies in the fundamental part the armed forces have played throughout the history of Chile and, particularly, during the 1973-1989 military dictatorship. Based on the events of October 2019, with the declaration of the state of emergency in Chile, and later in March 2020, with the state of sanitary emergency, the Armed Force have been prioritized once again in national policy debates.

Keywords : Armed Forces; Chile; dictatorship; Army; militarization.
