The article aims to understand the causes of the global resurgence of populism and its relationship with the current process of economic globalization. In analyzing the most relevant texts on the subject, we argue that the world has experienced significant changes in the exchange of goods and services, the management of the international system, and the ways of governing. After the fall of socialism, the free market and democracy were established as a government system in much of the world, leaving behind old populist systems. Nonetheless, as globalization advances, populist movements and governments resurface worldwide that openly question the globalization phenomenon and its results. Current globalization is going through a profound crisis at three primary levels: unequal wealth distribution, the erosion of representative democracy, and the widening of social gaps, facilitating a social environment for radical and binary discourses typical of populism. This article discusses the inherent consequences of economic globalization to the detriment of democracy.
