This article addresses the topic of the democratization of higher education, presenting a description of both its quantitative and qualitative aspects. This phenomenon is viewed as a process of the social transformation of teaching that seeks to expand access to higher education through the equal and equitable distribution of various educational opportunities. Through the application of principal component and cluster analyses, the Colombian departments are ordered and categorized according to their level of democratization, finding that Bogotá and Caquetá respectively exhibited the best regional performances quantitatively and qualitatively-speaking.
