Abstract

AVENDANO, Octavio  and  ESCUDERO, María Cristina. Elitism and the strength of National Agrarian Association (SNA) as business association. CS [online]. 2016, n.20, pp.37-74. ISSN 2011-0324.  https://doi.org/10.18046/recs.i20.2221.

This article aims to analyze the case of the SNA in its capacity as an union that has contributed to an elite formation -which can be considered both an economic and political elite. For this purpose, we will develop a characterization of the leaders who have integrated SNA and mainly, the leaders allowed to maintain their relationship with the political system. We also analyze the main milestone experiences of this organization before the agrarian reform in the 60s to its recent participation in the free trade agreements of the 90s and ahead. In parallel, we will mention other agriculture organizations who in one way or another have been linked to this association. Despite of the close relationship with more dynamic sector of businessmen, their representation has been questioned at different times by other unions in the agricultural sector.

Keywords : Chile; economic elite; interest Groups; SNA.
