Abstract

PORTELA-GARCIA, Juan Camilo. Solidarity Performances. Public Support for the 2013 Colombian National Agrarian Strike. CS [online]. 2023, n.40, pp.215-248.  Epub Dec 26, 2023. ISSN 2011-0324.  https://doi.org/10.18046/recs.i40.5745.

This article aims to explain how a favorable interpretation of the National Agrarian Strike was positioned in the public sphere. The category of solidarity performance is proposed to account for the support of actors who actively engaged in the course of conflict due to their moral positions, even if they do not belong to the offended group. A documentary archive is built to record those performances, to do so, several sources and interviews to participants in the protest were reviewed. It is proposed that the support was possible thanks to a symbolic coalition that resulted in a common interpretation: the striking peasantry was a victim that shared ancestral and historical ties with the other sectors of Colombian society. The classification of the protest as an insurgent action gave way to its codification as a democratic action thanks to the commitment shown in the solidarity performances.
