Objective:

To describe and analyze case reports and published studies in which a possible relationship between COVID-19 and mucocutaneous lesions in the oral cavity and face is presented.

Methodology:

A review was performed in Pubmed, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and Medline Complete databases, 56 articles were selected reporting mucocutaneous manifestations in oral cavity and face associated to COVID-19.

Results:

We found 91 reported cases with mucocutaneous manifestations in oral cavity and face, associated with COVID-19. Eighteen percent of the patients presented lesions at both facial and oral levels. The cheeks were the most affected areas representing 16 % and of oral lesions the most affected site was the tongue with 26 %.

Conclusion:

According to the findings, the presence of mucocutaneous manifestations in face and oral cavity are associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. It is expected that tissues with higher expression of ECA2 and TMPRSS2 are more susceptible to infection by SARS-CoV-2 and therefore present some type of lesion. Among the oral tissues with higher expression of these molecules, the tongue was described, which would favor a higher prevalence of lesions.
