Abstract

FUENMAYOR VERGARA, Luis Ricardo. Family ties and the labor market in Colombia: an analysis of the recent migrations. rev. econ. Caribe [online]. 2013, n.12, pp.29-73. ISSN 2011-2106.

ABSTRACT Although the variables used in the literature of the recent migrations do not fully explain its behavior, the studies that use alternative analysis are quite scarce. The present investigation proposes to include the family ties as an important determinant in the methodological analysis of the recent migrations in Colombia. Using data from 2008, models that measure the probability of be a formal employee and a recent migrant are estimated. In addition, the impact of the family ties variable in the monthly labor incomes is measured. The results shows that the family ties and having a job are factors that considerably affect the decisions to migrate.

Keywords : Recent migrations; family ties; formal workers.
