Sustainable Development constitutes one of the most important challenges for humanity. Given the relevance of this process, it is worthy of being analyzed and defined. A bibliographic review methodology is applied with the purpose of collecting definitions, criticisms, and extensions of the concept of Sustainable Development in an orderly manner. It is possible to segment theoretical, academic, and political positions and clarify their participation in current debates. It is concluded that the current notion of Sustainable Development is the result of the evolution of previous concepts; meanwhile, its meaning continues to be disputed in academic, political, and institutional spheres.
