HURTADO, PAOLA and VILLA, AÍDA LUZ. Market research of orange essential oil in Colombia during the period 2009-2014. rev.colomb.cienc.hortic. [online]. 2016, vol.10, n.2, pp.301-310. ISSN 2011-2173. https://doi.org/10.17584/rcch.2016v10i2.4653.
ABSTRACT Essential oils are products obtained mainly from plant materials and besides their therapeutic and healing properties they are used as raw materials for producing beauty supplies, food additives and higher value products. Due to the variety of plants and fruits that are grown in Colombia, the aim of this article was to analyze the market of essential oils between 2009 and 2014, with emphasis in orange essential oil, in order to identify the potential of obtaining citrus essential oils in the country and their transformation into more valuable compounds. In the analysis, statistical trade data sources were used of the Colombian companies that use essential oils for obtaining their products and the companies that commercialize it; the price of orange essential oil and their main by-products were also compared. The main producers of orange and exporters of orange essential oil on a global level were identified; Colombia despite being 28th in orange production, is the 44th in the list of exporters of orange essential oil. It was concluded that it is possible to expand the production of orange essential oil in Colombia for both supplying the domestic market and increasing exports; furthermore, it would be favorable for the orange industrialization, to not only use the essential oil for obtaining limonene but also other products of high value as carvone, carveol and perillyl alcohol.
