Abstract

MONSALVE, OSCAR IVÁN; ESPITIA, EDUARDO MARÍA  and  BOLANOS-BENAVIDES, MARTHA MARINA. Split fertilization as a strategy reducing the amount of fertilizer applied to potato crops in Colombia. Case of study. rev.colomb.cienc.hortic. [online]. 2020, vol.14, n.2, pp.240-248.  Epub Nov 11, 2022. ISSN 2011-2173.  https://doi.org/10.17584/rcch.2020v14i2.10523.

Potato crop fertilization in Colombia has low efficiency in terms of absorption of nutrients by the plant because of fixing, leaching or volatilization processes. To counter this phenomenon, this study evaluated the effect of the split applications of fertilizers on potato plants and soil. Five treatments were evaluated: Control - fertilization used by farmers locally; As - fertilization recommended by the lab; AsSplit - monthly split of lab recommendation; AsSplit25 - monthly split of lab recommendation, reduced globally by 25%; AsSplit50 - monthly split of the lab recommendation, reduced globally by 50%. The AsSplit treatment generated the highest yield (34.13 t ha-1), while the treatments that reduced the amount of fertilizer by 25 and 50% obtained lower yields (30.94 and 29.57 t ha-1, respectively). However, they generated the lowest amount of NO3 - in the leachate measurements at depths of 30 and 90 cm. The results suggested that designing the fertilization formula and applying it according to the requirements of the potato plant and soil fertility generate a positive effect on crop yield and the environment.

Keywords : Solanum tuberosum; split mineral fertilization; nitrate leaching; water and soil pollutants.
