Abstract

MORELATO, Gabriela et al. Family functioning and its relationship with parenting in socially vulnerable contexts. CES Psicol [online]. 2024, vol.17, n.1, pp.117-132.  Epub Mar 16, 2024. ISSN 2011-3080.  https://doi.org/10.21615/cesp.7089.

This work is inserted in the study of childhood and adolescence from the perspective of resources and family resilience. It is proposed to analyze parental competencies in a group of parents or caregivers belonging to socially vulnerable contexts; investigate aspects of the parenting history of this group; identify indicators of flexibility and cohesion of their family functioning and finally explore the relationship between the variables of family functioning and the characteristics of their parental competencies based on the paradigm of rights. The design was mixed-approach. 39 mothers, fathers or caregivers in charge of school-age children from socially vulnerable contexts participated. The instruments used were a focused interview and the FACES III scale (Olson et al., 1989) with Argentine adaptation (Leibovich et al., 2010) that evaluates adaptability or flexibility and family cohesion. The results noted low levels of cohesion and flexibility and real extreme type functioning. Significant relationships were also found between the high range of adaptability/flexibility with favorable parental function, caregivers' reflection on their role, and unexpected crises. From this point of view, when the type of parental function focuses on protective aspects, there is also a high level of family flexibility (flexible or very flexible), which is a factor of family resilience. It concludes that family functioning has been related to the current performance of the parenting function.
