Abstract

RAMIREZ-DUARTE, Diana; LOPEZ-PALACIO, Leidy Karina  and  URIBE-ESPINOSA, Daniela. BEYOND CHARITY AND PHILANTHROPY: THE EMERGENCE OF SOCIAL WORK IN ANTIOQUIA. Rev. eleuthera [online]. 2019, vol.20, pp.157-178. ISSN 2011-4532.  https://doi.org/10.17151/eleu.2019.20.9.

Objective.

To present a historical-critical analysis on the emergence of Social Work in Antioquia from the perspective of totality.

Methodology.

Documentary review of press articles in El Colombiano newspaper and documents on the history of Social Work of the time, as part of a wider investigation on the history of the profession in Colombia, carried out by the “Colectivo de Trabajo Social Crítico Colombia”.

Results.

The emergence of Social Work in Antioquia responded to the interests of the bourgeois class and the catholic church to alleviate the expressions of the social issue favoring the reproduction of the labor force, from the mediation of social services regulated by state policies.

Conclusion.

To overcome the teaching on the history of Social Work as evolution of charity and philanthropy to place it within the social division of labor and discover the contradictions inherent in its evolution.

Keywords : social work; capitalism; State; church; social clases.
