Abstract

ROBLEDO ABAD, José Fernando; CAICEDO MALLARINO, José Joaquín  and  DEANTONIOSUAREZ, Rodrigo. Study of survival of a cohort of 1,328 patients with breast cancer. rev. colomb. cir. [online]. 2005, vol.20, n.1, pp.4-20. ISSN 2011-7582.

Background: Breast cancer is an important problem of public health. In Colombia, it is the second most frequent location of cancer in women. Tumor size and pathological lymph node status are the most important prognostic factors for disease-free survival and overall survival. Objectives: To report the characteristics, the surgical treatment and adjuvant therapies of a cohort of patients with breast cancer, and to analyze survival based on clinical stage and on the number of positives lymph nodes. Materials and methods: Unidad Oncológica del Country in Bogotá, Colombia, registered information about characteristics and treatments of 1328 females with breast cancer from 1989 to 2003. A descriptive analysis was performed to evaluate the main characteristics for carcinoma in situ and for stages I, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB y IV. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to evaluate survival for mortality and for local and systemic relapses. Results: There were 112 patients with carcinoma in situ (8,4%); 50,8% of the patients were included with clinical diagnosis of early stage breast cancer (I, IIA) and 40% of them had an advanced stage (IIB, IIIA, IIIB, IV). Since the beginning of this register, we have lost to follow-up of 9,7% of the patients. Clinical stage and the number of positive lymph nodes showed statistically significant differences for mortality and for local and systemic relapses. Conclusion: As observed in other countries, this report shows similar outcomes in patients with early and advanced breast cancer.

Keywords : Breast neoplasms; survival analysis; recurrence; mortality.
