Abstract

FRANCO, Astolfo. Iatrogenia en cirugía ¿Cómo evitarla?. rev. colomb. cir. [online]. 2006, vol.21, n.1, pp.15-22. ISSN 2011-7582.

In the daily activity of a surgeon there is always the possibility of non intentional damage as the result of an intervention. Once the iatrogenic event has occurred, the first thing to do is to secure the best care, so as to mitigate its consequences. Both the institution and the professionals involved should accord the best way to confront the situation before patient and family. It becomes highly inconvenient to deny what is evident or those errors that are obvious. It is advisable to have an honest and transparent conversation around the iatrogenic event, assuming the corresponding responsibility, as well as to provide emotional and legal support to the team of professionals involved, both by the institution and their peers. The lessons learned from the iatrogenic event must be taken advantage of, so as to generate a collective learning among peers oriented towards the prevention of future non international damage.

Keywords : iatrogenic disease; medical errors; nonuerbal communication; legal liability.
