ARANGO MOLANO, Lázaro Antonio; SANTACOLOMA OSORIO, Mario and URBANO GUZMAN, Camilo Andrés. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors: overview. rev. colomb. cir. [online]. 2006, vol.21, n.3, pp.190-195. ISSN 2011-7582.
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are a rare group of neoplasms, recently described. They are strongly associated with expression of proteins that acts as tyrosine-kinase receptors (KIT) extremely important in cancer pathogenesis. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors have a better prognosis in comparison with other tumors, and its risk of malignancy is related with tumor size and mitoses number. Surgical approach is the standard treatment, but some antineoplastic agents as imatinib, when associated as adjuvant therapy, have shown a better disease control.
Keywords : gastrointestinal stromal tumors; proto-oncogen protein c-kit; antineoplastic agents; protein kinase inhibitors.
