SANCHEZ, Nora Beatriz y RUBIANO, Jaime. Oncoplastic surgery in mammary cancer. rev. colomb. cir. [online]. 2008, vol.23, n.4, pp.217-229. ISSN 2011-7582.
Breast cancer is the most frequent malignant disease in women. For the year 2002 in the United States there were 209,995 cases with 42,913 deaths and in Colombia there were 5,526 cases with 2,253 deaths. Since Fisher’ studies, which show that breast cancer is a manifestation of a systemic disease, the surgical management of this condition has changed dramatically being now conservative in nature, which should ac-complish two basic requirements, oncologic resections tht guarantee the local control of the disease, and acceptable aesthetic results. The emotional impact decreases because now women do not face the mutilation sequels and deformities left by tumor resection. This new approach has led to the development of the oncoplastic surgery. This article describes 19 elements to be used in the diagnoses and appropriate tumor resection, and describes and illustrates 10 breast reconstruction oncoplastic techniques for patients with favourable breast-tumor relation, meaning an oncological surgery with enough tissue for glandular-skin flaps to reconstruct the breast immediately. It is recommended to strengthen the training in the practice of this techniques and the creation of interdisciplinary teams of oncologist and plastic surgeons to offer better results in the treatment on breast cancer both oncological and aesthetic.
