Abstract

BEJARANO, Mónica. Intellectual production of the Colombian universities and teaching hospitals. rev. colomb. cir. [online]. 2009, vol.24, n.1, pp.16-22. ISSN 2011-7582.

One of the main purposes of the Asociación Colombiana de Cirugía is to serve as consulting body in matters related to General Surgery, especially in those pertinent to the teaching programs leading to the specialty training. Under this premise, we have evaluated the volume of research in general surgery that is carried out in Colombia as seen from the number of papers that are presented at the Annual Congress “Avances en Cirugía”, the National Surgical Resident Symposium, and the articles published in the Revista Colombiana de Cirugía, the official publication of the Asociación Colombiana de Cirugía, since the year 2000. According to the information retrieved by the Asociación Colombiana de Cirugía, there are 21 graduate programs in general surgery in our country, which offer more than 100 first year residence slots; however, only five universities appear in the higher ranking of intellectual production. With the advent of the new millennium, many changes have occurred in the surgical resident training programs, with emphasis on the quality of the educational experience. A successful academic department of surgery should offer the residents the opportunity for research experience. Those surgery departments with productive research programs, besides accumulating prestige, are able to obtain grants and have access to other sources of financial support for this scientific endeavor. For the continued advance of our discipline, general surgery, it behooves to have teachers motivated to the creation of an atmosphere of intellectual inquiry and creative knowledge. The responsibility of monitoring the quality of the graduate education belongs to all of us: students, government authorities, general surgeons members of the Asociación Colombiana de Cirugía, all of which are participants in the process of training general surgeons.
