Abstract

Team work is the process where different people from various disciplines share experiences, knowledge and skills to improve patient care. The ten elements that define health teams are: identification of a leader, value sharing, team culture and interdisciplinary environment, processes and infrastructure to accomplish the team mission, focus on quality with continuous feedback, communication between members, variety of disciplines, easiness of personal recruitment, promotion of interdependence and a trend to personal development. This essay analyses the use of these principles in current surgical practice and suggests some alternatives for its implementation.
