Resumen

MUJICA RONCERY, Felisa. Indigenous Fabrics in Current Fashion Design: A Look between Manual Labor and Industrial Manufacturing. Pensam. palabra obra [online]. 2018, n.20, pp.58-71. ISSN 2011-804X.

This analysis or reflection paper focuses on the indigenous communities of Colombia and Peru, where you can see the techniques, technologies and products with which different fabrics are made. This includes the raw materials, as well as the technical and technological processes developed by the indigenous community, the social relations in the weaving activity and, finally, the spiritual and physical (use) needs met by those woven products. It also analyzes the influence of the traditional indigenous fabrics from Latin America in the world of current fashion design. For this purpose, we use as example three renowned fashion designers who have used these indigenous designs for some pieces from their collections (Dior by John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Hernán Zajar). Finally, we present the difference found between both designs (indigenous and fashion collections) and attempt to answer the question of how these designers have appropriated or interpreted indigenous designs, if they keep the original meaning and symbolism of these tissues of if, on the contrary, they only keep the form of the design (figure-pattern).

Palabras clave : fabric; indigenous fabrics; fashion design; handwork; industrial production.
