The pedagogic and historical importance of Paulo Freire is essential to think about the construction of collective memory, processes of social recognition, and political representation in Latin America. His thinking and work are not only specifically related to the field of education, but the so-called social sciences, including communication, are also highly influenced by their enlightening, critical and cultural vision. This leads to the importance of understanding the transversal significance of the social categories converging around elements such as dialogue, mediation, the popular, freedom, love, and hope. His many contributions include thinking and assuming communication as a critical form of disengagement of individuals and the people's emancipation from those structures-both epistemic and political-that manipulate them and prevent their own production of knowledge and autonomy. Fifty years after the publication of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed, this text provides a brief reminder of the meaning of communication from his work and memory.
