In this article we review two of the most important literary works that analyze the relationship between mental illness and art, due to their great historical value and relevance for subsequent research in this field: The art of the mentally ill, by Hans Prinzhorn (1922/1972 and 2012) and Madness and art: The life and work of Adolf Wölfli, by Walter Morgenthaler (1921/1992). A critical theoretical analysis of both works was carried out in light of the psychoanalytic theories of S. Freud, D.W. Winnicott and J. Lacan that address crucial aspects of the functioning of the psychotic subject and their possible relationship with art, creativity and the artistic creation.
