Abstract

The author offers a vision of the African population and their castes in Merida, first to dismantle the popularized idea that yucatec and Merida's identity is the result of the mixing between Spaniards and mayas, forgetting to the African group. The author emphasizes to erase this popular idea, as well as in two important appointments. The first is to demonstrate that the idea expressed in the last century that the neighborhood of Saint Lucia was seat of blacks and mulattos from 1580 to 1620, is a mistake; and the second, present the evolution of the black's church built in the 17th century, until 1822. These two aspects required clarification because several scholars have committed errors using the information published.
