Abstract

PORTILLA HERRERA, KARENT VIVIANA. Restraint and peculio, two elements to understand the slave manumission. Santiago de Cali (1750-1810). Front. hist. [online]. 2015, vol.20, n.1, pp.96-123. ISSN 2027-4688.

This article show how during 1750 and 1810, the slaves in Santiago de Cali, searched their freedom using a type of common law, his own money and legal instruments of the Spanish laws. The restraint (coartación) was one of the ways that slaves used to get their freedom and autonomy. In this process, family ties, social relations and participation of slaves and free women were vital issues, because their used her savings to get free their families.
