Abstract
NACUZZI, LIDIA R. "Flamenco Indian": A Mestizo Leader at the South Frontier, 18th Century. A Discussion about Ethnic Labels. Front. hist. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.1, pp.38-63. ISSN 2027-4688.
The Indian called "Flamenco" lived during the mid 18th century in the southern frontier of the Río de la Plata colonial administration, whose capital city was located in Buenos Aires and which maintained relationships with the sovereign indigenous societies of the Pampa region. The analysis of the ethnic trajectory of Flamenco allows us to provide new reflections on how individuals perceive their identity ascriptions, choose, exchange and mix them in contexts of cultural contact and miscegenation of social, political and economic practices. We have meticulously searched -within a short time span- the mentions, the vocabulary and the reports of others regarding this subject, in order to discuss the validity of certain ethnic labels in these spaces and contexts.
Keywords : Ethnic groups; frontier; identities; leadership.
