Abstract

MORONI STEWART, DANIEL. The Labor System Inside a Chilean Colonial Hacienda: San Telmo of Queyilque (1758-1783). Front. hist. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.2, pp.48-77. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/2027468895.

The hacienda San Telmo of Queyilque, located in the dioceses of Concepcion, Chile, was a typical 18th century colonial hacienda. However, the unexpected death of its owner and the prolonged court case the ensued over the distribution of his belongings culminated with the inclusion, as evidence of his intent, four books with the accounting of the hacienda. These books permit us to see and analyze colonial haciendas from the owner’s perspective and the economic relations between the owner and his workers. Here we will analyze with the accounting books the labor system within the rural hacienda.

Keywords : accounting books; Colonial; hacienda; agricultural workers; 18th century.
