Abstract

This article aims to analyze the mechanisms of promotion and advancement in the Cathedral Chapter of Puebla (New Spain) between 1814 and 1820. Doing so, it tries to document the way the political changes of the period affected the relationship between the Catholic Monarchy and the clergy and specifically, the American Cathedral Chapters. Base on files from the Archivo General de Indias, the paper argues that during the period analyzed the main merit to obtain an ecclesiastical benefice was the monarchical loyalty. At the same time, it shows that the canon networks were the empirical fact more important to limit the Patronage and the fidelity to Fernando VII in the Cathedral provisions during the absolutist regime.
