Abstract

AGUIRRE SALVADOR, RODOLFO. Parish Issues and Shortage of Priest Assistants in Archiepiscopate of Mexico in the Late 18th Century. Front. hist. [online]. 2017, vol.22, n.1, pp.110-134. ISSN 2027-4688.

This paper explores the issues of providing priest assistants to parishes. These clergy gained more relevance during the XVIIIth century due to the conservation of large parishes and population growth. The priests had more difficulties to meet the sacramental needs of the faithful, so they tended to seek helpers. Although the Crown insisted that the archbishop was to appoint all necessary assistants, the lack of financial resources to pay their wages largely prevented to comply with the order of the king. How did the archbishop of Mexico, Alonso Nunez de Haro, solve this problem in the most populous diocese of New Spain?

Keywords : spiritual administration; Archbishopric of Mexico; New Spain; parishes; priest assistants.
