NAVARRETE, María Cristina. One Night of Lights and Celebration in Cartagena de Indias, 1690. Front. hist. [online]. 2017, vol.22, n.1, pp.136-163. ISSN 2027-4688.

In the second half of the 17th century the crew of the Spanish fleets and galleons sailing to the Indies and back was forced to hire foreign captains, pilots and sailors despite the existing prohibition. A number of them came from enemy nations and heretical religions. The individuals who arrived in Cartagena were likely to fall into the hands of the Tribunal of the Inquisition. The article aims to make good use of some inquisitorial documents that describe a Friday night party in 1690, whose participants were accused of gathering to celebrate Jewish practices. Thanks to their biographies, it was possible to witness their life experiences, their adventures, ways of thinking, beliefs, pleasures and woes.
