Abstract

GUILEN VILLAFUERTE, JOSÉ JAVIER. Imperial Wars, Patriotic Donations and Indian Towns in Chiapas, 1780-1814. Front. hist. [online]. 2018, vol.23, n.1, pp.128-161. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.314.

This article studies the collection of the patriotic donations that the Hispanic monarchy requested to the inhabitants of the province of Chiapas between 1780 and 1814, period in which the wars shook the Atlantic world causing serious problems to the Treasure of the king. Our purpose is to analyze how many donations were made by the people of Chiapas during these years, what procedures were used by the collectors and how many resources were obtained through their collection. Later, we studied how the Indians of Chiapas reacted to the attempts of their authorities to pay these donations, paying attention to the practices of fiscal resistance and negotiation that were deployed to evade the extraordinary contributions, to make them less burdensome or, even, benefit from them.

Keywords : patriotic donations; imperial wars; indian towns; Chiapas.
