Abstract

The article describes the production, distribution and sale of powdered tobacco in the Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada. With qualitative and quantitative documentation of the Archivo General de la Nación (Colombia) it is detailed: a) the tobacco industry in the viceregal district of Nueva Granada, b) the establishment of the Royal Tobacco Factory in Santafé, and c) from the Real Cédula of 1786 the different projects that were formulated for the elaboration of snuff inside the Viceroyalty. The article contributes to explain the vicissitudes that had both the income of snuff, as the Royal Factory of Santafé and the formulated projects, to meet the demand of the New Granada for powdered tobacco and snuff of excellent quality.
