Abstract

BRIZUELA MOLINA, SOFIA. "The Greatest Derision that there has been on this Earth". Abuse of Power, Persecution and Violence around the Founding of the Carmel of Santafé de Bogotá (1597-1608). Front. hist. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.1, pp.8-34. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.523.

Studies about the foundation of convents allow an exceptional understanding of the conflicts, tensions and disputes inside any society. In this article the establishment of a nunnery in Santafé (1606) reveals the latent conflict between the descendants of the first conquistadors and the Audiencia officials. Beyond the issues of spirituality, this case-study shows the multiple intersections of conquistadors’ families and their efforts to defend their privileges and social standings from the threats of the Crown policies and its officers.

Keywords : nuns; lineages; Nuevo Reino de Granada; Audiencia; encomenderos; 17th century.
