Abstract

QUIROZ, ENRIQUETA. For a Socioeconomic History of the Masons in the San Juan de México Tenochtitlán Partiality in Mexico City at the Beginning of the 19th Century. Front. hist. [online]. 2020, vol.25, n.2, pp.58-92. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.866.

The article studies the domestic expenditure of the masons of the partiality of San Juan Tenochtitlan in 1800. The main purpose is to establish a relationship between the family formation of these workers and the inflationary spiral started since 1800. It is argued in the article that the increase in basic food prices influenced their living conditions and the impossibility of supporting an extended family with the wage -especially pawn, officer- and on the contrary the life of lonely individuals, without children, or spouses. The investigation was made from the crossing of different economic sources such as prices, level of wages and census records of the year 1800 raised for the partiality of San Juan; an area that corresponds to a large sector of the population of Mexico City, traditionally recognized as a space inhabited by indigenous people. Taking as a focus of study the masons of this area, it is thought that through its three labor categories -pawn, official and outstanding- the impact of the economic crisis of the early nineteenth century on individuals and families is specifically exemplified with different income levels residing in Mexico City.

Keywords : pawn; officer; mason; family; consumption; prices.
