Resumen

NAVARRETE GOMEZ, DAVID. People of African Descent in the New Spain Mining Economy: Relegated or Unknown? The Pachuca-Real del Monte District in the Second half of the 18 th Century. Front. hist. [online]. 2021, vol.26, n.2, pp.142-168.  Epub 01-Jul-2021. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.1313.

This article reviews the role of the Afro-descendant people in the New Spain mining economy during the second half of the 18th century. While the presence of Afro-descendants in New Spain mining areas has long since been recognized by historians, it has not been duly investigated. Based on two parish censuses carried out in 1768, the significant participation of this social segment in the economy of the Pachuca-Real del Monte district, an important silver-producing area of central Mexico, is documented and analyzed. This study seeks to contribute to a more accurate appraisal of the social and economic participation of the Afro-descendant population and to question the marginal condition to which it has been relegated, even with respect to other subaltern groups. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of New Spain mining sector from a broader and more comprehensive viewpoint and given its relevance for the viceroyalty as a whole, to help build a more inclusive historic narrative/account of colonial Mexico, its society and economy.

Palabras clave : Afro-descendant people; economic role; colonial mining; Mexico.
