Abstract

NIETO MARQUEZ, MIGUEL ÁNGEL. From Nuevo Reino de Granada to Nueva España. The Professional Decline of the Engineer Lorenzo de Solís. Front. hist. [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.1, pp.74-94.  Epub Jan 01, 2022. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2048.

During the second half of the 18th century, a significant number of military engineers were assigned to America in order to carry out fortification works, although they also took care of other tasks such as public works, civil, religious and even territorial reconnaissance. Many of the most famous professionals were assigned to Cartagena de Indias and Veracruz due to their strategic importance, for example Lorenzo de Sohs, whose extensive career culminated in both places, where he carried out projects of great relevance until his death. This paper takes up the research on this engineer, providing new data that relate him to the sale of slaves and that highlight the conflicts he had with various authorities.
