ACOSTA PARSONS, DIANA CATALINA. Cleansing the Sin: the Legitimation of Francisco Ortiz, Natural Son, in Cundinamarca during the Second Half of the 16 th Century. Front. hist. [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.1, pp.252-272.  Epub 19-Jan-2022. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.1953.

The legitimations, also known as cleansings of blood or "cédulas de gracias al sacar", were a request to the king to change the status of a natural son into a legitimate one. When approved, they were a written recognition of their honor and quality. Particularly important in the 16th century, they were a tool for illegitimate -but recognized- children of Spanish fathers and indigenous mothers, that allowed them to achieve graces reserved for the Spanish elite, such as public and royal offices. These documents have been little studied for the Nuevo Reino de Granada, and the rich information on the case of Francisco Ortiz can reveal the negotiations around family, trades, and individual and family honor within the hierarchy of the neo-Granada elites.
