This article explores the existence of a coordinated fortification plan between the Bourbon crowns in order to provide the most important Spanish Caribbean ports with the technical means to modernize their defensive systems at the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession. To that end, both published and unpublished sources will be analysed to identify defensive principies and models of fortification for the new warfare in the 18th century Caribbean.
