Abstract

GALINDO-DIAZ, Jorge  and  MEJIA CLAVIJO, Camilo. Technical Resources Used in the Walls Repairments of Cartagena de Indias in the 18 th Century. Front. hist. [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.2, pp.87-109.  Epub July 01, 2022. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2052.

Although it can be thought that the techniques for rehabilitating structures considered historical are a recent concern in architecture, studies on intervention processes from the past allow us to understand that these are frequently performed actions and sometimes even as a solution for the lack of funds for the construction of new works, or the need to provide quick, practical solutions. The objective of this article is to present the way in which several important reconstruction and structural repair works were carried out on the walls of Cartagena de Indias throughout the 18th century, in light of the damage caused both by enemy attacks on the city and by the continuous onslaught of nature. Primary sources (original plans and reports) allow to describe the way in which works of this type were executed on the so-called Muralla Real, or La Marina front, which contributes to understanding the forms of knowledge and operational skills available at the time.

Keywords : military architecture; military engineers; wall repairments; Cartagena de Indias.
