The purpose of this article is to analyze the functionality of the captains and protectors of Indians in the process of conquest and pacification of the territory known as Gran Nayar, located in the Novo-Hispanic Septentrion, during the eighteenth century, and the relationships they established with certain ecclesiastical actors, especially with Jesuit missionaries. We seek to highlight those geographical and historical factors, needs, and interests of the local authorities that determined the work performed by these juridical officials in frontier territory. A key aspect focuses on the functions that these individuals could exercise: as governors, protectors, and presidio captains. To achieve our task, four sections are developed: geographical location and jurisdiction of the Nayar, the figure of the captain protector of Indians in the novohispanic north, the conformation of the protectoria of Indians, and the relationships established between Indians, Jesuit missionaries, protector and presidio captains.
