Abstract
MARTIN BLAZQUEZ, Francisco Miguel. Fiscal Protector de Indios during New Spain’s Collapse (1811-1821): Some Notes Regarding the End of a Colonial Institution. Front. hist. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.1, pp.139-158. Epub Jan 01, 2023. ISSN 2027-4688. https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2385.
In this paper, we will offer some advances in the knowledge around the fiscal protector de Indios during the end of the colonial period in Mexico, through the second decade of the 19th Century. Approaching the figure of the last occupants of this position, the prosecutors of crime of the Real Audiencia of Mexico, and their social and political positions, as well as the study of cases located in the Mexican National Archive, we will analyse some details about this institution of eminent colonial character around a decade that suffered strong social tensions and normative changes. In this way, we will shed light on their role in the management and control of pueblos de indios, the defense of their interests during wartime circumstances, or their collaboration with the viceregal regime.
