Resumen

AGUIRRE SALVADOR, Rodolfo. The Arrival of the Benefited Parish Priests to the Indian Towns. Politics and Conflict in Oapan, Archbishopric of Mexico. Front. hist. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.1, pp.161-188.  Epub 01-Ene-2023. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2398.

This article studies some consequences of the presence of benefited parish priests in the Indian towns of the archbishopric of Mexico. The system of benefited parish priests was established from the decree of the royal patronage of 1574 and the decrees of the third Mexican council of 1585. The investigation focuses on a case study: the parish of Oapan, founded in 1604. An extensive document provides valuable information about its operation at the beginning of the 17th century. Likewise, it records the events of a violent confrontation between the parish priest Francisco Gudiño and the Indians, showing the importance of politics as a key regulator of parish life. During the conflict, the balance that existed with the Indians of the republic was broken. These became the main adversaries of the parish priest.

Palabras clave : parish priests benefited; Indians towns; Oapan parish; archbishopric of Mexico.
