In Antioquia, since their arrival in the gold mines, the African diaspora began to flee, revolt, and form maroon communities (palenques), furthering the resistances that were taking place throughout the Americas and the Caribbean. The movement against oppression gained momentum in December 1597 when they conceived a “general uprising”, as it was called in the primary documentation analysed here. By cross-referencing sources, the article suggests that the enslavers were unable to counter the uprising, while the fugitives, drawing on knowledge of their African origins in Upper Guinea or West Central Africa, consolidated a fortified palenque surrounded by rice crops near the Nechí River, which lasted until at least the mid-seventeenth century.
