MORA IDARRAGA, Heidy Katherine. “Hasta que Fue Menester Apelar al Juzgado de Su Merced”: The Legal Culture of Litigant Slaves in the Viceroyalty of the Nuevo Reino de Granada (1789-1809). Front. hist. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.2, pp.145-172.  Epub 01-Jul-2023. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2507.

This article aims to study the construction of the legal-judicial culture of litigant slaves from the promulgation of the Royal Decree on education, treatment, and occupation of slaves on May 31, 1789, until 1809 in the Viceroyalty of the New Kingdom of Granada. This by delving into the relationship between the administration of justice and the slave protectors with the enslaved litigants to understand their long tradition of struggle within the limits of the law, the complex view they had about the functioning of the administration of justice and how they used it in their favor. The above will be achieved through the study of 35 processes consulted in the AGN (Archivo General de la Nación) of Colombia, covering the trials that reached the Audiencia de Santafé from multiple cabildos.

Palavras-chave : litigant slaves; Royal Decree of 1789; administration of justice.
