VOLLWEILER, Sabrina. Dynamics of Name Creation and Use: Jesuit Missions and Indigenous Groups (Pampa Region, 18 th Century). Front. hist. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.2, pp.250-275. Epub 01-Jul-2023. ISSN 2027-4688. https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2423.
The Compañía de Jesús founded missions south of the city of Buenos Aires (present-day Argentina) between 1740 and 1753: Nuestra Señora de la Concepción de los Pampas, Nuestra Señora del Pilar del Volcán and Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados. Other names than these Catholic denominations were also used in the historical documentation, based on the territory in which they were located, their state of operation, and the indigenous groups that religious and secular officials associated with each of them. We focus on the labels included in the names and argue that in the changing forms of denomination there are connections between the labels used to identify indigenous groups and the names used for the missions according to the interests of colonial agents.
