Resumen

PASCACIO GUILLEN, Bertha. “For the Record when It’s Appropriate”: The Material Culture of Antonio Caballero y Góngora through His First Inventories, 1776-1777. Front. hist. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.2, pp.276-309.  Epub 01-Jul-2023. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2451.

The study of the material culture of an individual allows us to know certain aspects of his personality, mood, tastes and interests from the analysis of his properties collected throughout his life; therefore, this article examines the inventories of goods that the Cordovan Antonio Caballero y Góngora took with him to Yucatán, his first bishopric in American lands in 1776. Its importance lies in the fact that he was a clergyman who had one of the largest Spanish libraries with diverse themes and languages, numerous works of art from the most renowned European pictorial schools, a large collection of numismatics and several scientific objects, which constituted the cultural capital that allowed him to position himself within the Court of Charles III, despite not having a noble lineage or title by blood inheritance.

Palabras clave : inventory; material culture; cultural assets; Enlightenment; bishop.
