The transfer of the capital of the Viceroyalty, in 1763, from Salvador to Rio de Janeiro is inserted in a context of transition through which the Brazilian economy was going through in the second half of the 18th century. This scenario of important transformations can be monitored through the behavior of fiscal indicators. Customs tithe performance is an example. The main tribute collected in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, the tithe reflected the strength of domestic income, as it was charged on imported products. Furthermore, it reflected movements in the main location of economic life: the port. Based on these characteristics, the objective of this article is to analyze a history of the process of formation of customs and data on the collection of tithes from Rio de Janeiro and Bahia between 1769 and 1806.
