Abstract

ALVAREZ VARGAS, Cristina. Upbringing-Regulation, Upbringing-Emancipation: A State of the Art about Upbringing Studies. Aleth. rev. desarro. hum. educ. soc. contemp. [online]. 2016, vol.8, n.1, pp.80-99. ISSN 2145-0366.

This article presents an approach to the research about upbringing during the past 15 years in Ibero-America (specifically, investigations found in Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain, Mexico and Venezuela). Boaventura de Sousa Santos´ postmodern Critic Theory is used to classify studies about upbringing in two groups: Upbringing-Regulation and Upbringing-Emancipation (the first one referring to upbringing as prescribing standards and universal rules, and the second one that comprehends upbringing like a situated cultural phenomenon, therefore , associated to the peculiarities of those who experience it). In each one, there is a presentation of three characteristic to refer those studies. Finally, some conclusions are proposed following Santos´ terms because they allow thinking parenting in two complementary lines: epistemological ("prudent knowledge production") and sociological (transformation of society for a "decent life").

Keywords : Upbringing; postmodern Critic Theory; regulation; emancipation.
