Abstract

SAENZ, Virginia. The Reasons for Violence from the Media Discourse. Analysis of Episodes in the School Space. Aleth. rev. desarro. hum. educ. soc. contemp. [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.1, pp.98-121. ISSN 2145-0366.

This article presents an exploratory study that analyzes the reasons for the episodes of violence in schools narrated by Argentinian media speeches in the period 19932011. Given the characteristics of the object of inquiry, the methodological approach was qualitative, and the information is analyzed in the framework of the educational discourse analysis. Among the results, we observed that a monocausal look is built to explain the violent episodes and undermines the actions of adults present at school. The reasons vary according to the actors involved (teachers, students, families of students) and appeal to a speech that is individualist to explain this phenomenon. Certain subjects are identified (misconduct carriers, drug consumers, with emotional difficulties, among other attributes) as responsible for the violence. We conclude that this way of representing the facts comes into play with the dynamics of social stigmatization. For its originality, this study constitutes a precedent for future inquiries on media representations of violence in the school space.
