FERRONI, Marina; MENA, Milagros  e  DIUK, Beatriz. Incidence of Socioeconomic, Family and School Variables in Low Literacy Levels. Aleth. rev. desarro. hum. educ. soc. contemp. [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.2, pp.110-127. ISSN 2145-0366.

Different public policies carried out in the last decades in Argentina allowed to significantly improve the permanence of children in schools. However, school attendance has not always guaranteed acceptable levels of learning. In fact, it is usual to find a significant percentage of children in schools in contexts of poverty with a very low literacy level. The aim of this study was to analyze whether socioeconomic, familiar or school variables are related to the difficulties with writing and reading that most children from poor neighbors have, despite of being part of the school system. Based on the results of a writing test, two groups of children were identified: a group of children who can't write simple words and another group with children exhibiting similar level of literacy to most of their school peers. Information about socioeconomic status, children school, and home literacy environment of children in the two groups was collected in an interview with children's families at their homes. Results show no significant differences between groups in home literacy environment. However, differences between groups regarding the educational institutions and with socioeconomic levels were observed.
