Today’s society faces a conglomeration of complex situations that directly affect children and youth. Reason why it is essential to train new generations as autonomous beings, capable of recognizing themselves in their uniqueness, valuing their particularities as characters that allow them to be, and face the different circumstances of life, where is inescapable to decide. In this sense, we need a teaching oriented towards the empowerment or construction of the autonomous being. Therefore, this study relies in reading as a suitable way since it makes possible other ways of understanding oneself and the context. The central objective is to encourage the formation of life-readers, interpreters of what surrounds them, active and individual beings who can decide conscientiously. The study was carried out using the investigation action method and as instruments for data collection the pedagogical diary and the students’ diary. Technological supports were also used: photography and filming. Thus, the study obtained findings such as the understanding of the reading exercise from different angles, through symbolic systems. It is concluded that reading is an ideal means for building the autonomy of the human being.
