This article reviews recent research on alternatives for the use of free time and strengthening the psychosocial development of children and adolescents, with the aim of preventing their involvement in risky behaviors, making special emphasis on the Positive Youth Development (PYD). The review identifies various studies on social intervention and educational accompaniment processes in extracurricular environments, associated with recreational, creative and artistic alternatives. In addition, the methodology implied that the texts have been published in the last decade and in refereed journals, following search criteria such as leisure, free time, extracurricular activities, adolescence, youth groups, sport, and music. The results show that adolescents who participate in extramural activities are less likely to consume psychoactive substances, acquire more skills to interact with others, have skills for conflict resolution and they improve their academic performance. These programs provide resources and skills in their process toward adulthood and stimulate their social commitment, greater educational and occupational achievement, increase decision-making capacity and develop responsibility.
